Bryn Mawr,
I had plans to go out to dinner on Saturday with my girlfriend in Bryn Mawr to a place that we had wanted to try since she moved there almost a year ago: Verdad Restaurant and Tequila Bar. The décor inside was amazing because it really felt like I was in a bar in Spain . The décor alone made me feel very similar to going to Jose Garces’ Tinto.
I love tequila and my girlfriend is not really a fan, so I ordered a strawberry jalapeno margarita and based on the recommendation of our waitress, she ordered the carpirinha. Both drinks were very delicious. Hopefully the picture of the margarita does it justice.
The carpirinha might have lived up to the hype that our waitress gave it by saying that it was the best carpirinha available in Philly. My girlfriend is Colombian, so she knows a thing or two about carpirinhas, and she said that it was a very well done one.
Verdad is a Spanish tapas bar so we ordered a few small plates to share. The hamachi ceviche was our first bite and it was very tasty. I don’t usually like coconut milk, but I have found that it tends to work really well in ceviches. The fish was tender and the coconut milk added a sweetness to balance out the dish.
Next out was a truffled flatbread that I knew I had to order as soon as I looked at the menu. It not only looked great on the menu, but my girlfriend is obsessed with truffles. I also have come to love the combination of sundried tomatoes and goat cheese, so this flatbread was right up my alley.
We also ordered scallops and cactus fries. Both were interesting dishes and very well done. The scallops were perfectly crispy on the outside, and paired very nicely with the fennel and carrots that they were served with. The cactus fries were so intriguing that we had to order them. Salty and delicious in every bite, the cactus fries were a nice change from the typical fries you find everywhere else. They were served with a pink sauce which complemented the saltiness of the fries with its sweetness.
Check out the picture of the BLTD below.
They served a bacon, lettuce, tomato and duck open faced sandwich on a toasted piece of baguette. Who knew a BLT could get that much better with a piece of duck and bacon cotton candy added to it? That’s right I said BACON cotton candy. It was a really cool idea, but I wish I had gotten more bacon flavor from the cotton candy.
The desserts that we ordered at Verdad were off the charts. I wish we had only ordered one, but the desserts were normal sized portions as opposed to the small plate variety that the rest of the meal was. The apple torta was ok at best. I really wish we had not ordered it and had instead only ordered the cheese cake. The goat cheese cheese cake was absolutely wonderful! It was incredibly rich and light at the same time. It was one of the best, if not the best, cheese cake I have ever had, and I would love to have it again and again.
Verdad is definitely worth a visit if you get a chance to head out to Bryn Mawr for an evening. It is authentic Spanish tapas, and I never appreciate food more than when it is true to its roots. It was a great meal, and I hope that when you try it, you like it as much as I did! Cheers!
