No Gambling on the Beef...

Charlie Palmer Steakhouse
3960 South Las Vegas Boulevard
Las Vegas, NV 89119

While I was on vacation with my buddy in Las Vegas for a few days in April, we decided
to try to eat as cheaply as possible while we there, but we wanted to go out to one nice dinner while we there so we didn’t miss out on the culinary Mecca that Las Vegas has become. We decided to have dinner at the Charlie Palmer Steakhouse in the Four Seasons Hotel. We had been drinking all day, so drinks at dinner weren’t really necessary, and we just sat back and enjoyed our delicious meal.

They started us out with a delicious bread basket, and then I ordered the duo of Hawaiian tuna for an appetizer. It was absolutely phenomenal. The tuna was incredibly flavorful, and the pickled radishes added a nice bit of acidity to the tender tuna. The freshness of the fish was unparalleled.

My buddy and I both agreed that the steaks that we ordered were of the tenderest variety that we have ever tasted. It was mondo flavorful and it was peppery and delicious. The crust of peppercorns was the perfect accompaniment to the meat. It was cooked perfectly medium rare and accompanied by a mound of freshly pickled onions. The acidity cut through the richness of the meat and I devoured the steak with gusto.

Charlie Palmer definitely gets a three pint rating in my book. The food was delicious and the service was spot on. The only thing really holding it back in my opinion was the price point. It was pretty expensive for us, but I know that the prices at steakhouses are generally pretty high. The food was very good, but not to point that I felt the prices were justified. Also, since we didn't get to try drinks I can't really review that portion of their service.

I would go back to Charlie Palmer Steakhouse in a heartbeat. They offered very delicious steaks and the service was pretty fantastic. Now having been there, I know that I can go to his places in other cities and be in for a great meal. If you get a chance to try it you should! Cheers!

Nothing But the Burger...

BLT Burger Bar
3400 South Las Vegas Boulevard
Las Vegas, NV 89109

My buddy and I took a four day trip to Las Vegas in April. It was my first time being there, and it was our first day, so we were walking around to the different casinos and having drinks and gambling at each of the different places. When we walked into theMirage, we decided to have lunch at the BLT burger bar.

There were burger bars all over Las Vegas, and if you think about it, it’s a great idea. It’s the type of food that people will eat at all hours of the day. It can be made cheaply, and then sold for a large profit, so why wouldn’t they be all over the place? This one was super modern, and the menu was full of new interpretations of the age old American classic…the cheeseburger. I decided on the cowboy burger served with chipotle barbeque sauce, Tabasco onions, lettuce, bacon and pepper jack cheese and my friend and I split some waffle fries.

The burger came out and I was hoping it tasted half as good as it looked. It was huge! The burger was seared perfectly and cooked exactly how I ordered it. The sweetness and tang of the barbeque sauce was perfect, and the crunch of the crispy onions and bacon left me in burger bliss. I devoured the entire thing and the fries too. They were crispy and hot, some really delicious waffle fries.

The BLT burger bar is an absolute home run. Their menu is fantastic and if you are into burgers, you don’t want to miss this one. Two and a half pints on this one. The burger was a little pricey, but the taste and texture were fantastic. The service was good and the atmosphere was pretty nice as well. The waffle fries were really a homerun for me, and if they had given us more of them it easily would have pushed them up to three pints. Give it a try if you are ever in Vegas and let me know what you think! Cheers!

Filling the Void in Medford...

Zinc Café
679 Stokes Road
Medford, NJ 08055

I  have recently decided to put in my own sort of rating system. It will be based on my opinions solely, and it will work on a scale of one to five pints of beer. One pint is for places with poor to fair service, poor to fair food, and a poor to fair atmosphere. Two pints is for places with fair service, fair food, and a fair atmosphere. 3 pints is for places with good service, good food, and good atmosphere. Four pints is for places with excellent service, excellent food, and excellent atmosphere. Last but not least, five pints is for places that blow me away with a flawless meal from start to finish in all aspects of the meal. This will be my first review with a rating, so I hope you enjoy and that it adds another dimension to my blog. Cheers!

Since one of my favorite places in Medford closed over a year ago, my family has been having trouble finding a go-to spot like the one we used to have. I really like one of the new places that we have found in the mean time, but my aunt and uncle don’t really seem to be as fond of it as my cousins and I are. That being said, I really think this place is great, and my cousin and his wife went with my girlfriend and I one weekend. We all decided to order different things and try a bit of everything.

We started with a spicy potato soup, the likes of which I had never tasted before. It was spicy, cheesy, hearty and delicious. There were bits of bacon mixed in as well as chunks of perfectly cooked potato. It was really quite fantastic. We also ordered the baked brie with apples and almonds to share. I had never had baked brie before, and it was really quite refreshing. The breading was really crunchy, and the salty/sweet contrast of the honey and cheese was really inviting. The acidity of the apple mixed with the nutty flavor of the almonds really made this appetizer flavorful and well rounded.

My cousin decided to order the burger and I ordered the shrimp with black pepper Alfredo pasta, and we split them in half. The burger came topped with Irish cheddar and applewood smoked bacon. It was really a nice combination of flavors. The Irish cheddar was really powerful, and the crispy bacon added a nice bit of smoke and salt. The pasta was fantastic! The pasta was cooked perfectly, and the shrimp and sauce that it was served in was creamy and comforting.

We decided to split a dessert, but I was thoroughly disappointed when it came out to us. I love bread pudding, but this combination of chocolate and bread pudding simply didn’t work for me. The chocolate was overwhelming and it just didn’t wow me the way the rest of the meal did.

Three pints for Zinc from me. Not only was this a delicious meal, but I have dined here many times and gotten take out many times, so many times that I have eaten almost everything on the menu. The food is always spectacular, even when you get it as take out. The service is always pretty good, and being a BYOB is always a nice feature in my book. The slip-up in the dessert course almost warranted a drop to two pints, but the consistency that they show with their savory food time and time again really warrants the three pint rating.

Zinc Café is really doing it right. They are making everything from scratch and they are really putting some incredible food out on the tables in their restaurant. You don’t want to miss this one, so give it a try and let me know what you think! Cheers!

Bull Riding Ballyhoo...

PBR Grill
1100 Pattison Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19148

A while back, my girlfriend and I headed over to the newly opened Xfinity Live one night during the eastern conference quarterfinals to watch a Flyers vs. Penguins game with some of my friends. We headed over a little earlier than everyone else was planning on getting there, so we decided to grab a table in the PBR Grill and grab something to eat before a long night of drinking began. It was our first time to Xfinity Live, and we were pretty impressed with the place. Other than the fact that it was clearly too small for the massive crowds that had been filling it up since it opened, it was a really cool hangout spot.

The PBR grill was just one of the pretty cool options offered inside Xfinity. It’s a southwest grill themed restaurant with the wait staff and bartenders dressed in flannel and jeans and a huge mechanical bull in the middle of the restaurant. Patrons can ride the bull all night, and the wait staff even shows off by getting on the bull and doing tricks for the customers.

My girlfriend and I ordered our meals, a carne asada burrito for me, and ribs for her, and we enjoyed a beer while we waited. I have to say we were quite impressed with the food when it finally came out. The ribs were absolutely outstanding. They were definitely some of the better ribs I have had in this area, and definitely some of the best I have had in quite some time. I know that’s a weird thing to say about a random bar in a newly opened Philadelphia spot, but they were delicious. I haven’t had all that much barbeque in the Philly area, so that opinion may change, but for now I stand by it.

My carne asada burrito was excellent as well. It came packed in a tortilla stuffed with black beans, Spanish rice, pico de gayo, cheddar cheese and lettuce. It was extremely filling and warm, leaving me completely satisfied after completing it.

If you are looking for a good time and some good casual grub, then the PBR grill is exactly the place for you. Just be wary of the crowds. They seriously are insane, but its totally worth braving them for some of the cool bars they have inside. Give it a try during one of your favorite Philly sports games! Cheers!

Another Winner from the 13th Street Queens...

Lolita
106 South 13th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107

My girlfriend and I really love to go out and get Mexican food. We had been eyeing up a place on 13th street called Lolita for some time before we decided to head over there one night for date night.  Lolita is yet another gem on the 13th street block between Sansom and Chestnut from the Queens of Midtown; Valarie Safran and Marcie Turney. Their other restaurants on the block include Barbuzzo and Jamonera (formerly Bindi).

It was a little cramped in there, but that is definitely a common theme in center city Philadelphia. However it was decorated pretty cool on the inside, and the menu looked pretty fantastic. We were at the very end of our Lent restriction, so we could still not indulge in meat since it was Friday, but we still had some pretty tasty options to choose from. We wound up ordering a pitcher of blood orange margarita mixer, guacamole with tomatillo salsa, regular salsa and housemade tortilla and plantain chips, enchiladas verdes con camarones enchipotlados, and salmon a la plancha con pure de palmitos.

Lolita is BYOB so we brought a bottle of tequila with us and used it to mix with the blood orange margarita mixture. Unfortunately, the mixture didn’t really taste a whole lot like blood oranges. It tasted like margarita mixture, and looked orange, but it lacked the punch that blood orange or any orange for that matter provides. Needless to say we killed about half the bottle of tequila and the whole pitcher of mixer, so it wasn’t bad.

The chips and salsa were very delicious. They had clearly just been fried because the oil still glistened on the chips, and the salsas were packed with flavor. I was pretty partial to the tomatillo salsa myself, because of the acidity and bite that were tasted in each and every bite. The plantain chips were pretty awesome too, and I would recommend them to anyone who hasn’t ever tried them before. I have come to be very fond of plantains in all forms because I date a Colombian woman, and she has shown them to me in all shapes and forms.

When our entrees came out, we were super excited. I was eager to dig into the enchiladas. The enchiladas were stuffed with shrimp, shitake mushrooms, jack cheese, and topped with salsa verde (Spanish for green) and served with cumin rice and refried black beans. They were creamy and salty, warm and gooey. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, and they married together perfectly with the corn flavor in the fresh tortilla. The refried black beans were the real show stealer. I had only had regular refried beans before and these black beans were a bit richer and had a depth of flavor that isn’t usually shown through the regular refried beans.

I also had the pleasure of tasting my girlfriend’s grilled salmon. The salmon was phenomenal. I don’t usually think of salmon and Mexican cooking in the same train of thought, but here it worked wonderfully well. Charred, light, and full of flavor, it was only enhanced by the hearts of palm puree underneath.

I would love to take anyone I know to Lolita for a night of good food and fun. I cannot wait to go back. Marcie Turney and Valarie Safran have yet another hit here on 13th street. They are the owners of other amazing eateries such as Barbuzzo and the former Bindi. Give it a try whenever you can! Cheers!
