The Happy Skeleton...

La Calaca Feliz
2321 Fairmount Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19130

I asked one of my friends who lives in the Fairmount area of Philadelphia for a suggestion of a good place to eat around there. My girlfriend and I had thought that her cousin was coming to visit so we wanted to take them somewhere fun. He suggested La Calaca Feliz. When I said the name of the restaurant to my girlfriend she said weird I don’t know what that word means. Turns out it’s a Mexican word for skeleton, but it isn’t used in South American Spanish so she didn’t know it. We laughed a lot about it on the way there, and when we finally arrived we had to wait about 15 minutes after our reservation to be seated. Once we were, we saw started to devise our strategy of our meal. We decided on the roasted bone barrow with huitlacoche vinaigrette, pork belly tostadas, tacos de coliflor, tacos de chorizo and a side of rice and beans. Since everything we ordered was on the smaller side, we figured we would have enough food.

I had also ordered a tequila flight called the Pedro Feliz, which came with Don Julio blanco, Casadores respodado and Corralejo anejo tequila. They served a shot of each and also a shot of a delicious concoction of tomato juice, orange juice and jalapeno juice. It was deliciously sweet, tangy and spicy and it was the perfect thing to chase the tequila with.

The bone marrow and the tostadas came out first. I had never had straight up bone marrow served from the bone, so this was a first for me. My girlfriend wanted to get it, so of course I obliged. It was dressed with a huitlacoche vinaigrette and tortillas served alongside it. It was a very interesting dish, and it definitely had a really cool presentation. It was a bone split right down the middle. We used a spoon to place some of it into a warm corn tortilla. It was really a tasty dish. The bone barrow melted in the middle of the tortilla. It was incredibly rich, but the lemony flavor of the vinaigrette cut through it nicely. The pork belly tostadas were banging! The thick slice of pork belly was seared perfectly and it was sandwiched between two crispy pieces of tostada. The sauce was spectacularly spicy, as were the slices of fresh jalapenos. The tiny bit of queso fresco on top and the sauce sprinkled over top was a nice touch of creaminess as well.

Our two kinds of tacos came out together with the rice and beans. I was very interested to try the fried cauliflower tacos because I had never had veggie tacos before.  They were crispy and delicious, as good, if not better than the meat tacos I have had in the past. The cauliflower was fried, but it wasn’t at all greasy. Adding the touch of lime to the tacos brought out a nice flavor profile that wasn’t there to begin with. The acidity really brought out the freshness of the cauliflower. We devoured them quickly. We had ordered rice and black beans to go with the tacos and I was really glad we did. The rice and beans married together in the best of ways. They were incredibly tender and provided just another reminder of the depth of flavor that Latin food has.

We of course did not pass up the opportunity to order dessert, so my girlfriend ordered us the Domingo sundae, a concoction of churro ice cream, topped with candied pepitas, caramelized popcorn and whipped cream.  While the churro ice cream did not have the deep churro flavor I was looking for, the sundae was spot on as a whole. The crunch factor of the pepitas and the popcorn was incredible against the cold, soft texture of the ice cream. None of it was too sweet; it was a homerun of a dish.

Three pints for La Calaca Feliz. Very authentic Mexican cuisine, with an American flair to it, but not so much so that it takes away from the authenticity. The flavors are bold and rich and the atmosphere is definitely hip and trendy. It is definitely worth a visit. Check it out and let know what you think! Cheers!

Took a Stroll...Found a Gem...

Miles Table
1620 South Street
Philadelphia, PA 19146

On a Saturday morning after sleeping in a little bit, my girlfriend and I decided to head out to grab some brunch because as usual she didn’t have any food in her apartment. I had the bright idea that we should go to Honey's Sit and Eat which had recently opened a new location on 22nd and South, but not realizing the time when we got there, it was over an hour wait. We were both pretty hungry, and luckily we had passed another place on our walk that happened to catch my girlfriend's eye on the way up. We turned around and walked over to Miles Table.

When we walked in, I realized it was super hipster. It was the type of place I would expect to see in Northern Liberties, but it was in the heart of Center City. It had a very homey feel to it, and we walked up to the counter to place our order. They place the menu on a blackboard near the counter and you can order off of that. The special sandwich of the day was a Salmon BLT, which sounded pretty tasty to me, so I decided on that while my girlfriend ordered the salted caramel French toast, the other item I was eyeing up. I also can never pass up an opportunity to order La Colombe coffee, so I ordered one as well.

The coffee came in a huge cup, and they refill it as often as you want. I love when places do that, especially when it is La Colombe. It is so tasty! There were all kinds of people in the place reading, talking and working on their computers, so it really had that kind of coffee house feel to it. Our food came out pretty soon thereafter and it definitely looked like we were in for a treat. Yes I know it’s a little weird that I ordered a sandwich with a tomato on it. I usually don’t like tomatoes on my sandwiches, but in this case it worked out fantastically. The pairing of the smoke of the salmon, the acidity of tomato, the crunch of the bacon, the creaminess of the mayo, and the slight spice of the hot sauce I added to it were a match made in heaven. I never thought I would like a sandwich like that as much as I did. It was really amazing. They served some house made kettle ships with it as well. They were ok, but definitely could have used a bit more seasoning.

I switched plates with my girlfriend when I was halfway through, so I got to take part in some of the salted caramel French toast as well. Boy, am I glad she decided to share! Holy cow it was heavenly. I thought it might be too sweet, but it was spot on. I think it might have been the salt in the syrup that balanced it all out. The syrup was mapley, caramel and salty, a supremely fantastic combination. The bread that they used for the French toast was also a really good choice. It got a nice crust on the outside but was still light as a cloud on the inside. We thought maybe they baked it in house, but it turns out they get it from Le Bus Bakery, one of the best in the city. It could not have been any better.

3 and a half pints for Miles Table. The food was spectacular, and the price point was pretty good. The place is pretty small, so don’t be surprised if you can’t get a table right away when you go try it. You definitely should because it is a great little spot, so check it out and let me know what you think! Cheers!

Raw Problems...

Raw
1225 Sansom Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107

On the final Friday evening of our Lenten meals last spring, I had made a reservation for my girlfriend and I to head over to a sushi place called Raw on 12th and Sansom. I was hoping that it was going to be a really tasty send off, especially because of how much I love sushi, so we headed over to Midtown and were seated immediately. As we were looking over the menu, we realized that the selection of sushi wasn’t that great, and the ones that really caught our eyes were extremely expensive. We did decide to order some of them, because they were the ones we were interested in, but we decided to start with the shrimp and lobster spring rolls, followed by the shrimp and cucumber roll, the green river roll, and the special roll of the evening which I believe was called the green tea roll.

Our waitress was pretty nonexistent all night. Actually I think we only saw her the one time when she took our order. Our food was brought out by someone else and our check was taken by someone else too. That never really adds to the experience very well, but I digress. The shrimp and lobster spring rolls were up first, and they didn’t do anything to help the cause. The spring rolls were extremely greasy and I really didn’t like the way the shrimp shell was left hanging out of it. It was almost like they wrapped the shrimp in a wonton wrapper and dropped it in the fryer instead of making an actual spring roll. We were both less than impressed with it.

We had much higher hopes for the sushi rolls that we had ordered. The shrimp and cucumber roll was pretty standard. Nothing bad about it, but definitely nothing to write home about either. The green tea roll was stuffed with fish and topped with pepper tuna and a salad of microgreens. Again it was ok, but nothing spectacular. It was kind of dry actually. It definitely could have used more sauce. The green river was the only one I actually cared for, but it was 21 dollars. Get out of here with those prices. I have never had a sushi roll anywhere good enough to warrant a price like that. The green river roll was spicy tuna and shrimp tempura, covered in green tea tempura flakes, topped with avocado and spicy lobster, garnished with green tea sauce and a spicy sauce.

One and a half pints for Raw. We were pretty disappointed with our meal at Raw, not entirely because of the taste of the food, but also because of the service and the pricing. It’s not worth a try in my opinion but you can always try it and let me know how it was for you. Cheers!

Pricey Burger Lunch...

Zinburger
923 Haddonfield Road
Cherry Hill, NJ 08002

Right near our usual sushi spot, a brand new burger and wine bar opened up. I headed over with a couple of guys from work one day for lunch because we wanted to check it out. When we walked into Zinburger, I immediately noticed how modern it looked. I also noticed how packed it was, even for the lunch rush. Luckily, we were seated right away even though it was packed. The place was really new, so our waitress was training someone, which usually I have no problem with, but this trainer was one of the worst I have ever seen. She disappeared for about 10 minutes after we were seated without taking any kind of order. When she came back, we finally did get to order, but I was already ticked off. We only get an hour for lunch, so waiting 10 minutes after we are seated takes 10 minutes we don’t have out of our lunch. It was still Lent when we went, so I didn’t order cheese on my burger, but I ordered the el Diablo and we all decided to split an order of fries.

The El Diablo came topped with jalapenos, no cheese for me, but usually topped with pepper jack, caramelized onions and chipotle mayo. By the time we got our food, which should not have taken so long, we only had about 15 minutes left until we had to be back in the office. When they brought out our food, we ordered shakes to go because we knew it would be a long time before we saw them again. We were all ravenous by this point, so we dug in immediately. The flavor of the burger was really nice. It was cooked to the right temperature, and the flavor in the toppings was amazing. The jalapenos were firey as expected, and the caramelized onion brought a nice element of sweetness to the burger. The chipotle mayo wasn’t very prominent, but it did add a bit of creaminess to the burger. My only issue with the burger really was the bun. It was too soft to hold up to the juiciness of the burger and its condiments. It started out ok, but it got soggier and soggier as the meal went on.

The fries were a little different, but were very tasty in their own right.  They were thin cut like frites, and extremely crispy. If anything they might have even been a little bit too crunchy. They were very thin, so I think cooking them just a touch less would have been perfect.

We took our shakes to go because of the time constraints. Mine turned out to be delicious. It was a standard cookies and cream shake, but it was done very well. It wasn’t too thick, so I could get it up the straw, and the cookies were broken down enough so that they didn’t get stuck in the straw either. The shake was probably the best part.

Zinburger gets two pints from me. The service was pretty terrible, but I would like to go back and see it now that they have had some time to work out the kinks. The burger was good, with the exception of the bun, the fries were good and the shake was really good. The price however was horrific for lunch. This isn’t Philadelphia; you can’t get away with charging 10 plus dollars for a burger, then charging 5 bucks for fries, and 6 bucks for a shake. They need to figure out a way to make their lunches more affordable. It is definitely worth a visit for the food alone, but I think dinner might be a better choice than lunch. Cheers!
