A
friend of mine from Elon's family owns a restaurant in Philly, but I didn’t
really find out about it until after we moved back up in the area. We began
hearing more and more about it as we spent more time in the city and started
dining out more. We decided to head up one Saturday morning and grabbed ourselves
some brunch. As luck would have it, our friend was home visiting for the
weekend, so we actually got to talk to him in the restaurant while we were
there. It was pretty cool to see his family in action.
The
menu was pretty standard for brunch, with little tweaks here and there. We both
looked over the menu and as we do a lot of the times when we go for brunch, we
ordered one savory dish and one sweet dish and split them. I decided on the
poached eggs Florentine and she ordered the banana bread French toast. We
enjoyed our cups of delicious La Colombe coffee while we waited for our food to
arrive.
When
the food came out there were some definite inconsistencies. Some things were
great, while others definitely needed some improvements. The eggs were poached
beautifully, so that when I cut into them, the yolk ran out nicely. The spinach
and sauce were very tasty. The biscuit and potatoes were not as successful. The
flavor of the potatoes was great, but they were a little underdone and
definitely not hot at all. The biscuit was a complete miss though. It was hard
as a rock, and it really didn’t add much to the dish at all.
The
banana bread French toast was the star of the brunch for sure. They had taken
what seemed to be a loaf of banana bread, and toasted it up in a skillet like
it was French toast. The flavor was amazing! The banana flavor really came
though, and the sweetness of the syrup and freshness of the banana slices only
made it that much better.
Two
and a half pints for Day by Day. Since it was so up and down, its hard to give
it a better rating than that. The banana bread French toast was amazing, while
the poached eggs Florentine were a bit of a miss. I will be back to check on it
again in the future and I hope I find more dishes like the banana bread French
toast. Give it a try and let me know what you think! Cheers!
