Cuatro Sombras
259 Calle Recinto Sur
San Juan, Puerto Rico 00901
My
girlfriend had been reading about hipster coffee shops, and she came across one
in Old San Juan called Cuatro Sombras. We decided to go there one Saturday
morning of our trip with her dad for some coffee and sandwiches. It was a funky
little place and it had a nice little garden outside in the back of the
building. We put in our orders and then grabbed a tablein the outside eating
area, a cute little indoor patio. They had a pretty small menu, but they
definitely had quite a varied selection of coffee. I wound up ordering the
Viejo San Juan sandwich, a latte and a bag of Dirty jalapeno kettle cooked
chips.
The
latte that I ordered was fantastic. They use the fancy pours when they pour the
coffees so they make all kinds of designs when they pour. Mine was a flower of
some sort, and my girlfriend's father's was a heart design… they were really
cool looking. I think it is amazing how people can create art in something so
simple. The coffee was very good, nice and strong like I prefer it.
My
girlfriend's father and I wound up splitting our sandwiches because we couldn’t
figure out which one had turkey on it and which one had chicken breast on it.
Mine, the Viejo San Juan had sliced chicken breast, tomato, long coriander leaves
and cilantro mayo on multigrain bread., while her father's the Yauco had smoked
turkey, aged cheddar, tomato, lettuce and sweet plantain mayo on pan de agua.
Both were very tasty, but definitely nothing out of the ordinary. The mayos
were the most unique things about the sandwiches, but there wasn’t much
substance to them. They were just your run of the mill sandwiches.
Two
pints for Cuatro Sombras. They have absolutely delicious coffee and a lot of
different varieties to choose from. The sandwiches are good, but they aren’t
anything overly special. The coffee alone is worth the visit, and if you are in
need of some decent food for a quick bite, then head on over to it when you are
in the area of Old San Juan! Cheers!
