Surprising Pies...

Town Spa Pizza
1119 MA-38
Stoughton, MA 02072

This place was a gem. My brother went to college right down the road from here at Stonehill College and after his graduation, we went there for a nice lunch. My brother raved about the pizza, so I knew what I was going to do. He suggested a pizza, with charred crust, buffalo sauce, buffalo chicken, jalapeƱos and bacon. Yessir! I also ordered a Sam Adams brick red ale, one of the best beers I had ever had but that you can only get in the Boston vicinity. It was just as good as I remembered it be. It’s a very tasty beer, medium bodied and just enough alcohol kick. It’s a very drinkable beer.

The pizza came out in fantastic fashion. I had already downed one beer as was working on my second when the pies came out. It's smelled incredibly delicious and it was. The crust was superiorly crunchy and just a bit buttery. The pizza was en fuego! The heat from the jalapeƱos and buffalo sauce were welcome, but enough to make my nose start running. The chicken and the bacon combination was amazing. The chicken was definitely fiery from the hot sauce, and the bacon provided a really great crunch and an extra bit of salt as well. I never thought the pizza would be that good here, but it really was. I also tried my fiance's Hawaiian pizza and it was just as awesome! The sweet and salty tang of the pineapple and ham was pure bliss when combined with the crunch of the crust.

Three and a half pints for Town Spa Pizza. This place was a real treat and it was huge. It was definitely a nice place around Easton and worth a visit if you are ever in the area. I will go back time and time again if I find myself in the area. Let me know what you think! Cheers!

Bahstan Steak....

Umbria Prime
295 Franklin Street
Boston, MA 02110

My aunt made a reservation for us for the evening before my brother's graduation from college. We all met at the Intercontinental Boston Harbor, and walked over to Umbria Prime for dinner. It was a pretty fancy place, with lots to like about the space. It definitely had an old steakhousey feel. The place was huge as well. They had multiple floors, with plenty of space to house large parties and still not have it feel crowded.

They have a really nice raw bar selection of oysters, so we ordered a few to share. I hadnt been ordering steak much when Ive been going out, so I decided to order a nice New York strip that was served with bone marrow. The oysters came with horseradish, blood orange mignonette and cocktail sauce. They were all deliciously fresh and not the least bit gritty. They were clean and light, a nice start to the meal.

My steak was perfectly cooked. It had a fantastic sear on it and the inside was hot pink medium. It was far too large for me to finish all by myself, but it was mondo tasty. I had the pleasure of also tasting my fiances lamb shank and my brothers seared tuna and both were very good. The lamb was super tender and almost didn't need a knife. The tuna was a large portion and had a really great sesame crust on it.

Unfortunately the dessert didnt live up to the rest of the meal. The bread pudding we ordered was ok, but it wasn't my favorite. I prefer more rustic bread pudding with chunks of bread in it, but this was all one cake. The texture was a little off putting to be honest. It almost seemed to be a bit undercooked and gooey inside. The vanilla ice cream definitely wasn't enough to go with it either. It needed to be bigger in order to be spread with each bite of the bread pudding.

Three pints for Umbria Prime. Overall I thought it was a pretty good meal. I think Umbria Prime is definitely worth a visit, but the price point is pretty high. You should definitely save it for a special occasion. I know Boston is expensive, but it's pretty pricey regardless. Let me know what you think when you go! Cheers!

Wicked Good Brunch...

Russell House Tavern
14 John F. Kennedy Street
Cambridge, MA 02138

My aunt and uncle and my fiance and I went here when we were all in Boston for my baby bro's graduation from college. My aunt and uncle were more than a little frazzled when they arrived because of the tough time they had finding parking in Cambridge, but their refusal to take the T in was their own problem to deal with! Ha We walked in and were told a 15 minute wait, but really we were seated pretty much immediately.

The place looks deceptively small from the outside, but when you get inside, you realize there is tons of room, and then even more downstairs! They had tons of great menu options to choose from for brunch. I wasnt going to order a cocktail, but my aunt beat me to it, so we followed her lead and ordered some bloody marys. It was a solid effort bloody mary with a good kick, but nothing too special about it. For food my fiance and I went our usual route and ordered a sweet dish and a savory dish and split them. I was really intrigued by the anti eggs benedict, a dish complete with fried poached eggs, yes I said fried, local english muffin, sausage, spinach, hollandaise and homefries. We also ordered the stuffed nutella french toast, topped with caramelized bananas and hazelnuts.

Our service was pretty good considering how crowded the place was. Our waitress was very attentive, and she brought out our food rather quickly. Everything looks excellent and we dug in immediately. My plate really looked awesome. For the most part everything was great. My only issue was with the fried poached eggs. The frying had clearly overcooked the yolks a little bit because they were not runny at all. That being said, a fried, poached egg is a revelation for me. Never had it before, and it is damn tasty. I thought the sausage and and spinach could have used a touch of seasoning, but they went well with the hollandaise and my oh my the english muffin was stellar. I have always wanted to try one that wasnt made by Thomas' and this one did not disappoint. It had that chew you look for from an English muffin and that amazing flavor as well. The potatoes were a very nice addition as well, and while they could have been a bit hotter and crispier, they were still on point.

The nutella french toast was awesome. While I think they could have put a bit more nutella inside, the flavor was remarkable. The textural and taste comarison of the toasted hazelnuts, vs the bruleed bananas and the toast itself was superb. Nutella is amazing on anything, and it did not disappoint here. It was very rich, but perfect to be shared after the savory portion of the meal.

Three and a half pints for the Russell House Tavern. The brunch fare that they were offering was fantastically executed. They had a really nice selection of beers and cocktails, and the place was simply enormous. It is definitely a place worth of checking out if you are in the Boston area. Check it out and let me know! Cheers!

The Masters vs. The Baby...

Vetri vs. Osteria Jersey Cage Match

After attending the first cage match for Amis vs. Osteria, my fiancƩ and I stalked the crap out of Alla Spina's Twitter feed to see when the next one was going to be announced. Unfortunately, we missed the next two due to being out of town, Osteria Jersey beat both Alla Spina and Amis, but we were able to make it to the Vetri vs. Osteria Jersey match that decided the winner of the Vetri Family cage match series. Osteria Jersey hadnt really been open all that long and was the baby of the Vetri Family of restaurants, so for it be going up against Vetri, it was pretty impressive. This time around we were actually able to snag two extra seats in addition to ours, so we brought a couple friends to show them what all the fun was about.

This time around, the secret ingredients were farro, long hots, top round and blueberries. Before the match kicked into high gear, Marc Vetri came up to give us a piece of advice. He told us that we should judge the competition based on food alone, and not on all the smoke and mirrors we were about to experience from the Osteria Jersey crew. I wasn’t really sure what he was talking about until they came upstairs, all dressed up like hillbilly's. They put on quite a show all night I have to say.

The first course was a salt baked quail with farro from Vetri and a moscato and ginger cocktail. It was a fantastic presentation and an extremely delicious little bird. Adam Leonti brought the bird up first in its salt baked crust to show us all, and then took it back down to the kitchen to break the crust, and carve up the quail. While I thought the quail was very tasty, I didn’t get as much of a salt flavoring as I thought I would. I actually thought it could have used a bit more seasoning to be honest, but the farro was a very tasty accompaniment. Was it the star? I am not so sure. The pairing was awesome, a delicious concoction of moscato and ginger juice.

The first course from Osteria Jersey used the beef top round in a fried mortadella sandwich with caramelized cippolini onions, foie gras mustard and pickles. It looked like a pork roll sandwich, but it tasted even better than you can imagine. The fried mortadella was amazing, and the richness and acidity added to the sandwich by the mustard was outstanding. The plating was a little lacking, but they had a theme all night of kind of a trailer trash idea. Their cocktail pairing was delicious as well. It was a play on a black cherry soda, and it tasted just like it, except a bit stronger.

Next up from both teams were pasta courses using the long hots, and drink pairings of beer from both as well. From team Vetri, we had a whole wheat paccheri with long hots and sardines, served with a glass of Schneider weiss. From team Osteria Jersey, we had corzetti with long hot pesto and ramps and a stella atrois served in a solo cup. Great efforts by both teams here. Long hots aren’t something I particularly think of on a regular basis that pairs well with pasta, but they really did in both cases. The freshness of the pastas in both cases was amazing and the spice really kicked into you the more you ate. I preferred Vetri's beer pairing of the Schneider Weiss because of its touch of sour, and smooth flavor, it simply seemed to compliment the heat of the pasta better. However, I enjoyed the corzetti with long hot pesto from Osteria Jersey to the Vetri pasta. It was a bit more tender, and the really picked up the sauce with each bite.

It was time for the third courses, and the fullness and booze was starting to set it. These cagematches really are a test of your stamina. Both teams served red wine with their third courses, a melot from Osteria Jersey, served in a Hawaiian punch can, and a glass of Lisini from Vetri. Vetri's wine choice blew Osteria Jersey's out of the water, although I would have liked to taste Osteria Jersey's not in a can. Nothing tastes better out of a can, and the wine definitely picked up some of that metallic taste. Vetri's wine choice was absolutely perfect though. It was a delicious a light wine, but it stood up well next to the beef involtini that was served with it. The involtini was stuffed with morel mushrooms, giving it an earthy interior flavor to contrast to the seared exterior. The Osteria Jersey plating effort was outstanding. They served a blueberry bbq chicken and apricots with blueberry corn bread on a giant wooden serving board. The flavor of the chicken and the cornbread was phenomenal. The cornbread was one of the best things I ate all year no joke. The cornbread was incredibly moist, and the tart and sweet blueberry sauce simply made it that much better. The chicken was awesome as well. It was charred just enough to leave the skin crispy and flavorful. It was pretty neck and neck for me at this point. It was going to come down to dessert.

Final courses were coming out and we were nearing our capacity. Plating the entire evening definitely was won by Osteria Jersey, and that didn’t change come dessert time. They basically served us a campfire smore roast, complete with a fire and smores ingredients and a hazelnut butter and jelly cocktail. They served us farro cracker smores and puff farro rice crispy treats with the cocktail, but none of it really worked for me. The best of the dish was the puffed farro rice krispie treats. The crackers were dry and overly hard, and the marshmallows weren’t all that flavorful. The drink was super sweet and just odd. I liked the idea, but the execution wasn’t really there. Vetri's dessert course was phenomenal. It was a blueberry baked Alaska served with limoncello to sip on. It was much simpler than the effort of Osteria Jersey, but it was perfectly executed. The meringue was perfectly toasted and had amazing texture. The blueberries tartness cut through the sweetness of the ice cream and cake perfectly. It was heaven on a plate. What is there to say about limoncello. I love it, so this was the perfect way to end the meal for me.

Marc Vetri's opening statements to us all described the outcome of the match perfectly. Osteria Jersey was more show and shock value than execution at the end of the day, and Vetri came out on top by a healthy margin. Dessert blew it out of the water for me, but others had them way ahead even going into the dessert course. It was another fantastic evening in the upstairs of Alla Spina. It’s a really intimate event where you can share a great time with friends and tons of great food and drinks as well. Keep and eye out! These are events you don’t want to miss! Cheers!
