A True Testament to Delis...

Kibitz Room

This year when my former colleagues and I went to Lancaster in February, we discussed Jewish delis in our area at home. I had never been to a traditional one, so when it came time for us to go out to a mentor lunch, we asked that the partner take us out to the Kibitz Room in Cherry Hill for some traditional Jewish deli fare. I have passed this place so many times, I am shocked that I did not know it was there. From the moment you walk in the door you get that traditional New York Deli feel. You order at the counter from the massive array of options that they have and then you sit and help yourself to the pickle bar and wait for them to bring out your food.

I had recently read an article in South Jersey magazine about the 50 best sandwiches in South Jersey. One of those sandwiches was from the Kibitz Room, so I decided to order it here to get the best they had to offer. I ordered the hot pastrami sandwich with a potato pancake on the side and helped myself to a heaping plate of pickles.

The pickle bar was amazing and definitely one of the coolest things ever to me. I love pickles of all kinds, so I chose as many different options as I could. Sweet and spicy, garlic, pickled green tomatoes, pickled cherry peppers and pickle chips were just a few of the options I tried and they were all incredible. I love the vinegar punch in every bite of anything pickled, and I especially loved the spicy pop from the cherry peppers.

The pastrami sandwich was piled high with delicious and tender pastrami. The rye bread was the perfect vessel for it. I added a bunch of the spicy yellow mustard they offered at the table to round out the taste beautifully. The potato pancake served on the side was quite tasty as well. It was very crispy on the outside and very fluffy on the inside. It was the perfect amount of a side dish to round out the sandwich meal. The sandwich was huge, so after finishing it up, I was packed to the gills.

Three and a half pints for the Kibitz Room. I have been back again after this trip and I can tell you it was just as good the second time around. They have so many different options to choose from, all of which are authentic Jewish deli cuisine, and from what I can tell, it is all delicious. The pickle bar alone is worth a visit. Try it out and let me know what you think. Just make sure you go hungry because the portions are huge. Cheers!
